Project synthesis

The South African Broadcasting Cooperation (SABC) is a section of the public broadcaster, whose purpose is to deliver on the public education mandate. This section provides educational content to the channels and stations of the SABC, and sustains these through the supportive elements of print, outreach and awareness campaigns.

Strategy/Objectives

The purpose of multimedia project is to support the implementation of the newly developed national school curriculum (Curriculum 2005). It aims at empowering schools to improve the quality of primary school education in under-resourced communities through training of educators and provision of multimedia educational resources in three learning areas (numeracy, literacy and life skills) for learners and teachers.

The goals for SABC project are:
· To help improve classroom practice by enhancing teacher methodologies and helping to improve learner performance.
· To help demystify Curriculum 2005 and translate some of the outcomes in practical terms.
· To improve teaching by providing high-quality learning resources in line with the new curriculum.

Target group

The project is implemented in 50 schools (200 teachers) in two of the twenty districts of the Eastern Cape over the next two years.

Activities and Expected Results

The project is implemented in 50 schools (200 teachers) in two of the twenty districts of the Eastern Cape over two years. In each school, four foundation phase teachers are trained in the use of media in education. Printed resource materials that provide a full, curriculum-linked schedule and visual equipment are distributed to the selected schools. 40 district personnel are included in the training. A total of 240 persons will be trained. Mechanisms will also be established for the teachers to share their training with other educators at school level. The project will add value to the districts where SDC has already invested its resources.

The resource print materials will help teachers to get maximum benefit from the television programmes and to encourage utilisation of the service.  These include:

  • Posters, broadcast schedules and information about the programmes to be broadcast.
  • Guides for teachers on how to use the programmes in the classroom.
  • Guides for School Governing Bodies. These provide tips on how to generate resources and funds for playback equipment, and how to manage these resources.
  • A facilitator's guide which supports organisations that train teachers on the use of media in education.

Partners

SABC Education commissions various service providers from the non governmental organisations and training sectors. It also has links to universities and educational institutions and broadcasters internationally. SABC also works on the mandate of the Department of Education, and links with media agencies like New Media Licensing, Macmillan SA, and Tony Dallas.

Project duration

The project is supported from November 2002 to December 2004.

Funding

The amount of R3' 210'680 has been allocated for this project.

Geographical area

Although SABC operates in all the nine provinces of South Africa, the SDC funding is for the North East Region of the Eastern Cape.
